Australia

I have only scratched the surface with my travels in Australia. Therefore, this is not a comprehensive guide to visiting Australia just my thoughts on the areas that I have recently visited and some general advice about visiting Australia.

Overall I loved Australia. The climate is wonderful, the people are warm and friendly and it is such an outdoor life which I loved.

We had a very limited trip to Australia where we spend some time sailing on the Gippsland lakes and visiting Western Australia – see the links below.

Visas

There are a number of different visas for visiting Australia depending on where you are coming from. From the UK the best option is an eVisa which is free. In order to apply for this you need to create a Immi account first. This is easy to set up online and you then apply for the eVisa from that account.

Currency

Local currency is the Australian Dollar which is worth about £0.50. Please click below for a conversion calculator

Driving in Australia

Any driving licence written in English can be used to drive  in Australia e.g. UK or US licence.. If your licence is not written in English you may be able to use an English translation or you can obtain an International Driving Permit.

When driving in Australia you must have your driving licence  with you.

Plugs

The type I plug is used in Australia. This is a 3 pin plug but adaptors with just the two lower pins will work as well

Best Time to Visit

This is not a straightforward question due to vastness of the country and the climate of north and south Australia is very different. Therefore, you need to decide where you are going before deciding the best time to visit it. The four season model of Europe also does not really work in Australia and the indiginous people of Australia split the year up into six seasons which again vary from the north to the south. In general terms the south of Australia is hot from December to March and that is a good time to visit southern Australia. Whereas this tends to be the wet season in the tropical North and the best time to visit there is June to September.

For more details on the seasons Audley Travel have a clear guide – see link below. I have also given links to the calendars of the indigenous populations of the Southwest of Australia (Nyoongar calendar) and Northern Australia (Kakadu calendar)
